Characterizing perceptions of an abbreviated ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment for community pharmacies

ObjectivesThis study sought to characterize users’ perceptions of, and identify the average time needed complete a newly abbreviated version of Institute for Safe Medication Practices Safety Self Assessment Community Ambulatory Pharmacy (MSSA-CAP).MethodsThis took place within large, national, nonprofit, faith-based health system. An ISMP’s MSSA-CAP was developed through an iterative process by researchers system’s medication safety officers (MSOs, i.e., assessment tool's 'users'). Retained items included those with nonoverlapping (1) bolded or keywords; (2) “quick asks,” answerable without external information; (3) were relevant community pharmacy practice (i.e., nonambulatory care–specific). During site visits, MSOs assessed organization’s pharmacies tool. Users completed pre- post-visit surveys asking their spent using full versions MSSA-CAP. Results analyzed descriptive statistics.ResultsSixty original MSSA-CAP’s 216 retained. Between August December 2019, six MSO users 59 across 10 states On average, reported needing 86.1 ± 35.4 minutes assessment. Sixty-seven percent agreed strongly that good length, compared only 17% Collectively, scored highest on related Physical Environment Prescription Labels, lowest Hard Stops Proactive Risk Assessments.ConclusionStreamlining in tools may be useful overcoming barriers implementation pharmacies.
